My Philosophy
"What would happen [in a community] if we raised a whole generation of boys [and girls]
to love and to be loved, to connect? There is the potential to spark life into these kids.
The potential to change [and influence] all by teaching kids to become part of a team and a community."
- Joe Ehrmann
The purpose is to empower, to influence, to teach, and to love; for such intention will both reveal and instruct life lessons and purpose through the game of football. The game of football is about preparation, selflessness, knowledge, wit, adversity, and courage; it teaches toughness, perseverance, confidence, humility, team work, work ethic, consistency, and accountability. Football reinforces the meaning of respect, belief, passion, sacrifice, and emotion; which nourishes the discovery of one’s identity, one’s self, one’s principle, one’s character, and one’s life. I want to direct them towards the light of opportunity, not the darkness of limitations. The power of encouragement, empathy, compassion, and love will open such doors of enlightenment. I am a transformational coach.
The long term goal is to provide these young men with opportunities to pursue their heart’s desires; to fulfill their given ability into reality. As a coach, the task is to build them up, not break them down; to hold them accountable for their actions both good and bad. John Wooden once said, "A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment." As a result, I not only want to be their football coach. I want to be their mentor, their role model, their adviser, and a positive male figure in their lives. The idea is to establish lifelong relationships outside the confinements of the weight room, track, end zones and sidelines; for I want to inspire them to understand they can do anything they choose to pursue with attached perspective and work ethic. However, no reward comes without self-discipline, self-motivation, commitment, ambition, and sacrifice. Football provides a platform where perception, attitude, conduct, and vision are both created and facilitated. Athletics hold the key to such fundamental characteristics. The purpose is to build men of character and men who serve others; for they too will be products of their environment.
“You should never be defined by what you do, by the things you have;
you've got to define yourself by who you are and who you impact and how you
impact people. And that's the thing I try to get across to my players.”
